Tim Sherwood has claimed that Leeds United’s summer transfer target, Ivan Toney, is now ‘ready’ to earn an England call-up.

Over the weekend, the former Newcastle United striker struck a quite brilliant hat-trick as Brentford beat Leeds United 5-2 on home soil.

From his ice-cool penalty, his one-step free-kick and then his chip from outside of the area, it was a stunning hat-trick from the 26-year-old.

Prior to the 2022 summer transfer window slamming shut, Toney was a player being targeted in the market from Leeds to Manchester United.

It’s no surprise that he was getting such a spotlight put on him because his five goals from his opening six matches is proof as to why he is being looked at.

Either way, Sherwood thinks it’s now time for Toney to earn that call to Gareth Southgate’s squad ahead of the forthcoming international matches, as he told MatchDay Extra on PL Productions (03/09/22 at 8:40 pm)

“I think he is ready now for an international call-up for England,” said Sherwood. “I think he needs to get in and around the squad.

“He has the confidence. He’s playing for Brentford, with respect to Brentford, they aren’t the highest quality side. These he never misses (penalty v Leeds).

“Then his one-step free-kick which goes into the top corner as well. And then this (hat-trick goal) is exquisite.

“When he comes out, it’s his first touch, he kills the ball, little nutmeg, no panic, then takes it forward and dinks it over the top of the defender.

“In his interview, his voice is great as well, isn’t it?! He sounds like Barry White. The boy has everything.”

GARETH SOUTHGATE WATCHING…

As Premier League football begins to heat up again, Southgate has been seen in and around the grounds where he is checking upon England regulars and hopefuls.

He was recently in Italy watching Tammy Abraham in action as Roma suffered a shock 4-0 defeat to Udinese in Serie A.

Abraham is currently the guy behind Harry Kane and he should maintain his place ahead of this forthcoming squad announcement.

But will Southgate name an extra few, so he can have one final last look at players ahead of the World Cup? If so, then Toney has every chance to get selected.
