This might just go down as a seismic weekend in the Premier League title race following Liverpool’s late, late show at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Darwin Nunez was the man who scored the winning goal for Jurgen Klopp’s side, after being fed a brilliant cross from Alexis Mac Allister.

Steve McManaman was impressed by Alexis Mac Allister’s display and how he ‘hardly gave the ball away’ in another much-changed Liverpool midfield, as he told Premier League Productions (02/03/24 at 5:10 pm).

Liverpool’s win over Nottingham Forest was marred by angry scenes at the full-time whistle, with the home team annoyed at Paul Tierney’s ‘incorrect’ call that led to the winning goal – Dermot Gallagher shared his thoughts.

That will continue to hit the headlines, especially given the effect it has on the Premier League title race and the relegation battle.

But Liverpool fans won’t care one jot because these are three huge points in their quest to win the title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge.

And Steve McManaman was sure to highlight the role Alexis Mac Allister played at the City Ground for his injury-hit team.

Alexis Mac Allister helps Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest

“I thought he had an excellent game,” said McManaman. “Sometimes, it gets lost when it’s 0-0.

“They dominated possession and I thought he hardly gave the ball away. He was one of the most impressive players for Liverpool.

“His cross for the goal was fantastic – a brilliant day and a brilliant result for Liverpool.”

Alexis Mac Allister’s debut season at Liverpool

There were a lot of eyes on the changes Liverpool made to their midfield in the summer, especially with the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

It was clear as day, changes needed to be made because that lack of bite, control and aggression was one of the reasons why the club didn’t secure Champions League football last time out.

But with players like Mac Allister, that is now starting to change because the £35 million capture from Brighton is proving to be a top, top purchase.

It has also probably provided a warning to Liverpool that they don’t need to splash the cash on those £100 million stars because they can get the best out of players for much smaller transfer fees.
