It wasn’t a dream Everton debut for Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin of 1. FSV Mainz 05 looks on during the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and 1. FSV Mainz 05 at Signal Iduna Park on April 13, 2019 in Dortmund, Germany.

Marco Silva has admitted that Everton new boy Jean-Philippe Gbamin had ‘problems’ on his Premier League debut.

The Toffees kicked off their Premier League campaign in underwhelming fashion as Silva’s side were held to a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Everton were dealt a major blow when summer signing Andre Gomes was withdrawn at half-time with a suspected ankle problem, prompting the Portuguese manager to introduce Gbamin.

But the 23-year-old had a very mixed bag of an afternoon, with Jordan Pickford and Yerry Mina saving his skin on a few occasions following sloppy play.

And Silva has acknowledged that it wasn’t a dream bow for the Ivorian, but stressed that he needs time to adjust to life in England.

“When I changed it with Jean-Philippe Gbamin he had some problems, which is normal he needs to adapt,” he told The Echo.

“When you sign new players, young players they need time to adapt and it was one of the keys for us because we started losing easy balls during that second-half.”

Gbamin arrives after spending three years in Germany, having been in France before that.

The intensity of the Premier League might’ve been a culture shock and although some Everton fans might’ve questioned him, Silva is definitely right in saying that he needs – and deserves – time.
