Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott has had a brilliant season away from Merseyside.
The Premier League champions loaned the 17-year-old to Blackburn Rovers last summer but despite his age, he has taken everything that the Championship has thrown at him.
Elliott is regarded as the future of Liverpool and five goals and 10 assists from 30 games in all competitions this season indicates that he has a very bright future.
But mistakes are totally inevitable at his age – and he made a big one last night.
Rovers now haven’t won any of their last seven league outings after losing 1-0 to Reading on Tuesday night, after Elliott cheaply lost possession deep in his own half for what proved the fatal goal.
It was the first low point of an otherwise glittering loan in the Championship for the Liverpool gem.
And Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray has refused to condemn him, praising his humility to acknowledge his error and apologie to his team-mates.
He told the club’s official website: “Harvey’s apologising to the team, but he’s been brilliant for us all season and things like that happen sometimes. He got caught in a poor position and it cost us, but I won’t stand here and criticise him, he’s humble enough to acknowledge his mistake.”
Confidence is such an enormous thing for any player, but especially teenagers.
But Elliott must remember that he’s on Liverpool’s books for a reason and hopefully he doesn’t let Tuesday’s error fester and develop into a poor run of form.
He’s a staggering talent and although mistakes are inevitable, all he has to do is learn from it and he’ll instantly be a better player because of it.
