Kevin Campbell has suggested on the Highbury Squad Youtube channel that Arsenal should sell Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who is now on loan at West Bromwich Albion.
Maitland-Niles joined West Brom on loan from Arsenal in the January transfer window until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old was struggling for regular playing time at the Gunners and also wanted to play in his preferred midfield position instead of as a full-back.
Former Arsenal striker Campbell, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that manager Mikel Arteta does not trust the 23-year-old to play in midfield.
The Englishman has also suggested the Gunners to cash in on the youngster at the end of the season.
Campbell said about Maitland-Niles on the Highbury Squad Youtube channel: “Sell him, sell him. He doesn’t want to be a jack of all trades. He wants to play midfield.”
The Englishman added: “The fact of the matter is that obviously he doesn’t feel as comfortable as we would like him to be in some of the full-back positions, although he has done decent jobs there, especially in the FA Cup run back-end of last season.
“He was awesome. But he wants to play centre midfield, and I don’t think the manager – and the manager was a midfielder, he definitely knows – he doesn’t trust him in midfield.”
Leaving Arsenal permanently?
Maitland-Niles has established himself in the West Brom midfield and also has the backing of manager Sam Allardyce.
If the Baggies are able to avoid the dreaded drop to the Premier League at the end of the season, then it would make sense for the youngster to explore making his loan move permanent so that he can progress in his career in his preferred position.
