Alan Shearer told Match of the Day that Gareth Southgate ‘doesn’t trust’ Aston Villa’s, Jack Grealish.

The Villa playmaker suffered the dreaded call of being subbed as a sub as England booked their place in the final of Euro 2020 last night.

Grealish came onto the field during the second half when scores were 1-1 with Denmark.

And when Harry Kane put his side ahead after extra time, Grealish was hauled off for an extra defender in Kieran Trippier.

Added with Shearer’s comments, over on ITV (07/07/21 at 11:00 pm), Gary Neville, also delivered his take on how all of this unfolded last night.

“Look, there have been moments before games and all the way through this tournament where Gareth Southgate has been questioned,” said Neville. “And he would have been battered if it had gone wrong.

“Trippier in the first game. Not playing Grealish enough – he has done things his way throughout the tournament. There is no ego in that dressing room.

“Jack tonight has suffered. It’s an embarrassing moment for him in the sense of being sub subbed. No one ever likes it. But he will recognise it was the right call for the team.”

Shearer added on MOTD: “Well, you don’t achieve what he has achieved in his career without having a nasty streak. A tough streak. Without having to handle tough things and make big decisions.

“He has been a captain at every club he has been in. You don’t get to be in a position of being England manager without having a ruthless streak. It had to be done. It’s clear he doesn’t trust Jack defensively.”

There is an unfortunate myth that needs to be debunked about Grealish and his efforts off the ball.

In a Villa side that has climbed from mid-table in the Championship back to the Premier League, he hasn’t done it strolling around the pitch but running himself into the ground.

The call from Southgate is fine, and correct because England got over the line, but Grealish will now have this reputation of someone who cannot be trusted defensively and that’s not right.
