Steve McManaman wasn’t happy that Joe Gomez was deployed to play an ‘inverted right-back’ role during Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Wolves.
Once again, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool made life difficult for themselves in a Premier League game when they fell 1-0 behind to Wolves inside ten minutes.
Joe Gomez, from a defensive aspect, was all over the shop, with Pedro Neto sending him to the cleaners during the game.
But with injuries at centre-back and Trent Alexander-Arnold also missing, it meant that Gomez was asked to fill in at right-back by Jurgen Klopp, but McManaman wasn’t happy with his role, as he told Premier League Productions (16/09/23 at 8:35 pm).
Towards the back end of last season, and now during this campaign, fans have constantly watched Alexander-Arnold come into the midfield from his right-back role.
On occasions it has worked, but it has also had its flaws, but when Gomez was playing that role, McManaman made it clear ‘he doesn’t need to do that’.

“Joe Gomez is now playing like this inverted right-back,” said McManaman. “He is starting at right-back, then going and playing into centre midfield.
“He doesn’t need to do that.”
Weakened Liverpool beat Wolves
This was an impressive performance, not just because Jurgen Klopp’s side came from behind, but because they have key players missing.
Three starters at the back were either injured, suspended, or in Ibrahima Konate’s case, just fit enough for the bench.
Yet still, the Reds walked away with all three points, as they continue to breathe down the necks of Manchester City.
