Speaking to Everton’s club website, Toffees U18 manager Paul Tait has hailed Tom Cannon after the Merseyside outfit’s game against Wigan.
Everton’s U18 were involved in what sounds like a fantastic game against Wigan on Thursday, coming back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 after extra-time in the FA Youth Cup.
Cannon was the man making the headlines against Wigan, he’d missed a penalty in normal time, but he stepped up a gear after the initial 90 minutes, netting twice in extra-time to seal the win.
“Tom’s a goalscorer,” Tait said.
“I think you’ve got to be a certain type to keep putting yourself in positions to score. He doesn’t hide. That takes a certain type of mental toughness and instinct.
“I was delighted with him. His all-round game was really good. For five or 10 minutes, he let the penalty miss affect him a little bit.
“But then, after the half-time break, he was very good.”
The 18-year-old seems to have the talent and mental ability to become a real player one day.
To miss a penalty and come back to score twice takes immense mental grit and toughness, and as Tait says, you’ve got to be a certain type of player to keep putting yourself in those positions.
The Merseyside club seem to have a number of talented youngsters coming through, and while the likes of Thierry Small and Anthony Gordon have been earmarked as future Goodison Park stars, Cannon could be the next top striker at Everton.
