Aston Villa’s season got a little worse the other night.
Dean Smith’s side lost 3-1 away to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Thomas Partey headed the hosts into a 1-0 lead after beating McGinn from the corner.
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings was visibly furious with his teammate immediately after the goal – and here’s what Wright said about it.
He told Optus Sport: “John McGinn kind of gets in the way. He doesn’t do anything. He gets in Tyrone Mings’s way. I think it’s his man because Tyrone Mings had a go at him not long after that.”
Shoddy
It was another shoddy defensive display from Aston Villa, if we’re honest.
Remember, this is a side that lost 3-2 at home to Wolves last weekend, conceding all three of their goals in the final 10 minutes.
Smith’s troops look nowhere near as resolute defensively as they have been and it’s a major problem.
Even though Mings was annoyed with McGinn’s efforts to stop Partey, the Villa powerhouse was guilty himself of not doing enough to prevent the Gunners’ third – and killer – goal, jogging back when Emile Smith Rowe broke free.
There’s a real lack of cohesion back there at the minute and Smith has to make things work a lot better.
McGinn, who cost £2.7 million three years ago, wasn’t perfect in North London but, then again, nobody in claret and blue was.
