Andy Cole says Harry Kane was right not to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Manchester City because he wouldn’t have been a better fit at the Premier League champions than Erling Haaland.

The Premier League legend added that Pep Guardiola needed a penalty-box striker, not someone like Harry Kane, who he thinks drops too deep for Spurs.

Added to that, the treble-winner at Old Trafford thinks the £200k-a-week star (Spotrac) doesn’t have the pace Erling Haaland has showcased since his transfer to the Etihad in the summer.

Back in 2021, Kane was keen on securing a transfer to Manchester City and they even put a £100 million on the table for the 29-year-old, as reported by Sky Sports.

But a certain Daniel Levy remained stubborn and he didn’t allow his star striker to leave, which then led to the road of Manchester City bringing in Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

During Andy Cole’s days in the Premier League, he smashed a remarkable 187 goals despite not being a penalty-taker, and he shared his thoughts on two of the dangerous forwards in England’s top-flight today, as he told Filthy Fellas.

Kane would have been a better player for Man City than Haaland: “No, no, no,” responded Cole. “Shall I tell you why? Man City have been looking for someone who just wants to stay in the box, that’s what Haaland does.

“Harry Kane, for me personally, I don’t think I am the only one who says this. He has been dropping so deep recently. Why is he dropping so deep? If you look at Haaland, if you look at his goals the other day against (Leipzig), there were all tap-ins. That’s all Man City needed, with him, he has got stupid pace as well.

On Kane having 21 PL goals for a team that doesn’t create many chances: “You see when you say that, ‘they don’t create a lot of chances’. But when the chances are created, who are they created for?

“He did (Guardiola tried to get Kane). But I have been in it. When I was at Newcastle, the team was built for me to score goals. Tottenham is built for Harry Kane to score goals. If you look at the chances and how they are created, it’s for him.

“Harry Kane is a fantastic player. But he doesn’t have the pace Haaland has. The way Man City want to play at times, they want to go in behind – Harry Kane can’t do that.”

HAALAND V KANE

It’s remarkable that both players can hit 30+ Premier League goals this season, yet the possible record-breaking numbers Kane posts will be overshadowed.

The England captain has 21 to his name, whereas Haaland has 28 from 26. Could the Man City man even hit the 40 mark? In truth, don’t put it past him because it wasn’t so long ago that he scored five in a game.

Whilst there was more depth in quality, in terms of strikers, during Andy Cole’s days, English football has two devastating number 9’s that no one in the Premier League can touch.
