Micah Richards has paid tribute to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson for the way in which he and his teammates dealt with the European Super League fiasco earlier this week.

Last Sunday, Liverpool, along with five other Premier League clubs, announced that they were breaking away from UEFA in favour of a Florentino-Perez led privatised division full of the continent’s biggest clubs.

The proposal was met with widespread disgust and even Boris Johnson and Prince William voiced their opposition to the idea.

By Tuesday night, Liverpool and the rest of the English clubs involved had pulled out, before the Reds’ owner John Henry delivered an apology message to the infuriated supporters the next day.

Led by Henderson, the Liverpool players released identical statements on their social media platforms, expressing their support for the fans.

And Sky Sports pundit Richards has told The Daily Mail that the 30-year-old midfielder – a £20 million signing in 2011 – deserves credit for standing up to be counted.

He said: “It cannot go unnoticed how the players stood up to oppose it and nobody expressed the sentiments better than Jordan Henderson, who organised a collective response from Liverpool’s squad. He got the tone of his words bang on. Then again, he does it every time. He is a true leader whose importance for club and country must never be underestimated.”
