Stevie Nicol says Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United possibly moving for Chelsea star Mason Mount this summer will prove to be a better deal than James Maddison joining Tottenham Hotspur and Kai Havertz securing a transfer to Arsenal.
The Liverpool legend added that James Maddison is a player that ‘disappears’ following his move to Tottenham, even though he can ‘produce’ with the ball going forward, as he told ESPN.
Whilst he questioned why Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have decided to snap up Kai Havertz, whose Chelsea teammate Mason Mount could be Manchester United bound, as reported by Sky Sports.
These are big moves that are being made for sides that are in very different places.
For Arsenal and Manchester United, they are in the Champions League next season and looking to push for the Premier League title next season, whilst Spurs will be looking to get back into Europe.
In terms of need, you would argue that Tottenham have made the best move because they are crying out for a player like Maddison, but for Nicol, he explained why the soon-to-be Mount deal will prove to be the best.

“If I am picking a team, then I am going to rely on Mason Mount more than the other two (Havertz and Maddison),” said Nicol.
“After that, I am going to rely on Maddison because when you get on the ball going forward. He can produce. The one I trust the least is Kai Havertz.
“Some can say that he (Mount) didn’t have a good season last year, that’s correct. But coupled with injury, he needed a break as well. But during the last three to four years, he has arguably been Chelsea’s best player going forward. As a coach, I know what I am going to get from Mount.
“The other two, it starts going downhill a little bit. Maddison, as I said, when the going gets tough, he disappears and Kai Havertz, I am not quite sure what he’s going to give Arsenal. Is he going to start?”

Mount and Maddison’s England futures
It remains to be seen if these calls from Mount and Maddison prove to be game-changing for their England chances and starting under Gareth Southgate.
Nobody questions their call-ups, but they aren’t regular starters, but could all of that change next season?
If the duo impress at their respective clubs, then it will enhance their chances of starting for England when they push to win Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.
