Speaking on the Claret and Blue Podcast, Neil Cutler has been speaking about Steven Gerrard’s personality and his relationship with the Aston Villa fanbase.

Gerrard has always been one of the most beloved figures in football, especially amongst Liverpool and England fans, but for one reason or another, the Villa fanbase never really took to him.

Despite this, Cutler says that Gerrard did have a great personality, sadly though, even he had to admit that it didn’t click for him at Villa.

However, saying that, the goalkeeping coach says that he didn’t deserve some of the criticism he received from the Aston Villa fanbase, but he understood that supporters were frustrated by results at the time.

Gerrard didn’t deserve it

Cutler spoke about the former Villa boss.

“His general persona, the way he is. He’s desperate to win games and he brought that across with how he spoke to players, meetings, how he trained, but it just didn’t click. There was bad luck along the way with that, we had injuries at difficult times. Given more luck he would’ve moved forward,” Cutler said.

“He’s not a bad person, he’s not a bad manager, he’s a top guy with some good ideas.”

“That came across in your tweet when he left, you wished him well and said he’s a good guy, but fans sort of went back on that,” The podcast’s host said.

“He didn’t deserve that, but fans want results and in the end the results never came. That’s just the way it is, there’s a way fans want to see Villa play and they want results.”

Way of the world

In all honesty, no managers deserve the amount of abuse they get from their own fans, but sadly, that’s the way of the footballing world.

Results can often define a true football fan’s mood all week, and while it’s never nice to call for someone to lose their job, it’s easy to understand why supporters get so worked up when things aren’t going their way.

Gerrard is a man who deserves respect, but the Villa fanbase turning on him was inevitable in the end.
