Gary Neville has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t elbow Cristian Romero during Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester United, as he told Saturday Night Football on Sky Sports.
Just after Ronaldo scored for the away side yesterday, he was involved in a challenge with Romero minutes later, where he tried to get ahead of the Tottenham man.
In order to put his body ahead of the centre-back, he put his arm across the Spurs player, who went to the floor holding his face when challenged.
VAR did check the incident and they allowed the game to play on, as they didn’t see an issue with what Ronaldo did and instead just awarded the foul.
During his commentary stint for Sky, Neville made it clear that Ronaldo did put his arm across Romero’s face, but it wasn’t an elbow.
“Well, there is an incident here,” said Neville. “Cristiano Ronaldo, he definitely tries to put his arm across Romero as he is chasing back.
“That left arm, it is an arm, it’s not an elbow. You can always tell when someone goes in with an elbow, you can see that little shift. It wasn’t that.
“He put an arm to try and get in a position in front of Romero.”
That Ronaldo incident is something that would have been the least of the Spurs fans worries given how things panned out in the game.
In the second half, Nuno Espirito Santo got serious heat from his supporters, who weren’t happy with the football or the decisions he was making.
One moment, in particular, stood out and that was Nuno deciding to take Lucas Moura off – it was met with a chorus of boos.
Then there was Harry Kane. It doesn’t need to be explained what happened with him in the summer, and with only one Premier League goal this season, every bad touch and pass is met with a vicious reaction from his supporters.
Given how the Spurs fans reacted to what they saw yesterday, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Nuno is gone by the time the international break kicks in.
