‘He could go there’: Player Newcastle dumped tipped to join Chelsea

Troy Deeney has written in The Sun that former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney could find himself at Graham Potter’s Chelsea before long.

The Birmingham City striker has raved about Toney, and believes that Manchester United should have signed the former Newcastle United man.

Deeny has said that former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea could eventually make a move for the ex-Newcastle striker.

The former Watford striker wrote about Toney: “I remember Ivan was linked with Arsenal and Manchester United previously and he would have shone there.

“He would have been a perfect fit for United in terms of what they currently need up front, as well as Arsenal until Gabriel Jesus redefined that role for them.

“If he has the year he will likely have, even Chelsea will be keeping an eye on him. He could go there long-term and be a real success under Graham Potter.”

Mistake from the Magpies?

If Ivan Toney does move to Chelsea, then it will highlight a blunder from Newcastle United in letting him leave.

Newcastle signed the English striker from Northampton Town in 2015, but the Magpies decided to sell him to Peterborough United in 2018.

Toney was able to make only a handful of appearances for the Newcastle first team.

While he was on the books of Newcastle, Toney had loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic.

Toney could not get an extended run in the first team at Newcastle, but he has flourished since he left the Magpies for good, first at Peterborough and now at Brentford.

The 26-year-old has scored five goals and given two assists in seven Premier League appearances for Brentford so far this season.

Toney scored 12 goals and gave five assists in the Premier League last season, and scored 33 goals and provided 10 assists in the Championship in 2020-21.
