Danny Gabbidon told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Wales’ win against the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening that Tottenham defender Joe Rodon came from ‘nowhere’ to make a match-winning block.

With Wales winning the World Cup qualifier 1-0, heading into stoppage-time, Rodon produced a heroic block from point-blank range to prevent the Czech’s from scoring.

It was a piece of defending you expect from a Jose Mourinho player as the Welsh fans wouldn’t have been the only ones getting off their seats, but the Tottenham faithful also.

Former Wales international, Gabbidon, hailed Rodon’s ‘unbelievable’ moment whilst watching it unfold in real-time.

“Well, that’s a match-winning block, unbelievable defending from Joe Rodon,” said Gabbidon. “He comes from nowhere.

“That is an outstanding bit of defending. Getting something on it and somehow it flies over the bar.

“He knows what it means to the team. It’s a yard or two off him, but he just flings himself at the shot. Gets a little lucky with the deflection.”

Tottenham’s £11 million man (Sky Sports) is proving to be a pretty astute summer purchase now.

He has that hard-hitting and old school side to his defending, which Mourinho clearly loves, but he needs to be playing more.

Rodon now needs to be a regular until the final ball is kicked, regardless of results, because Tottenham need individual players to show progression and not many at the back are doing that like he is.
