Chris Sutton has intimated that Steven Gerrard may be up for taking the Newcastle United job.
Newcastle are searching for a new manager after parting company with Steve Bruce on Wednesday morning.
Graeme Jones has been placed in charge of the Magpies’ senior side but the man himself has claimed that it’ll only be for two matches – today’s clash with Crystal Palace and the visit of Chelsea next weekend.
A number of foreign coaches have been linked with the post, including Paulo Fonseca and Unai Emery.
But Jim White revealed live on talkSPORT on Thursday that he’s been told Newcastle are looking for an English boss.
Gerrard, of course, has also been linked to the role and even referred to Newcastle as ‘the Toon’ this week when quizzed about it.
And Sutton, speaking to BT Sport on Thursday night, believes that’s an indication that he might well have a soft spot for the St James’s Park club.
He said: “He called them the Toon didn’t he? I’ve never heard him speak about Newcastle in that fashion. A little bit of love for the Newcastle support? Has he ever said stuff like that? Hmmm…”
Wind up?
Sutton has a love/hate relationship with Rangers fans – mostly the latter – and therefore this might be an attempt to wind up the Ibrox faithful.
After delivering a Scottish Premiership title last season, ending Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid, Gerrard is revered on the blue half of the Old Firm divide and losing him would be devastating.
The 41-year-old, who earns £210,000 per month, is a born winner and the likelyhood of him leaving Glasgow mid-season, when another league title seems there for the taking, is remote.
