Former Celtic striker Tony Cascarino believes Chris Wilder may be the ideal man to ‘regenerate’ the fallen Hoops as he prepares to leave Sheffield United, while speaking to talkSPORT (12 March, 11:00am).

Neil Lennon must know exactly how Wilder is feeling.

After a disastrous 2020/21 campaign, a bonafide club legend is about to bid farewell, walking away from his dream job as the empire crumbles around him.

The Blades were mired in League One when the Stocksbridge-born Wilder took over in 2016. Four years later, he had Sheffield United dreaming of European football after a stunning return to the top flight.

But, according to the BBC, Wilder is now packing his bags, his glorious spell at Bramall Lane coming to a conclusion more dissatisfying than the Game of Thrones finale. Well, it was good while it lasted.

The Steel City side nailed to the bottom of the table and hurtling back to the Championship.

Cascarino, however, does not expect the tough-talking 53-year-old to be out of work for long. Especially with Celtic in need of a coach capable of closing the growing gap between themselves and newly-crowned Scottish Premiership titles Rangers.

“Celtic is a typical club that Wilder could regenerate. That atmosphere; he builds football clubs and that’s what he’s done over the years,” said Cascarino, a Celtic centre-forward in 1991/92.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if a Premier League club came in for him.”

It is three weeks now since Lennon’s admittedly-overdue departure and we are no closer to finding out who will replace the Northern Irishman at Parkhead.

The list of reported managerial targets is both long and varied, encompassing promising philosophers like Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard, alongside veteran pragmatists a la Mick McCarthy, David Moyes and Michael O’Neill.
