Speaking to Off The Ball, John Giles has been discussing Jesse Marsch’s post-match comments after Leeds United’s 4-0 loss to Manchester City.
Leeds were hammered by City last weekend, but Marsch remained rather optimistic after the game stating that the 4-0 scoreline wasn’t an accurate reflection of how the game played out.
However, Giles wasn’t impressed by the American’s outlook after the game. The United legend says that Leeds got a hiding and that he can’t understand Marsch’s view on the match.
What’s been said?
Giles said he was worried about Marsch’s attitude after the game.
“What had me a bit concerned was the attitude and the words from Marsch after the game. He actually said it wasn’t a 4-0 match, he said it was a loss but he felt like it was a win. But they got a hiding, it was 4-0 and he’s on about the first-goal not being a free-kick, but City didn’t need to score from that or the corner kick they got. I can’t understand how he can say that, you lost 4-0 and you’re coming into big matches now. If that felt like a win, what will it take to feel like a loss? It’s just unrealistic and I don’t know what he’s talking about when he does that,” Giles said.

Blind optimism
It’s all well and good to be optimistic after hardship, but there’s a fine line between optimism and naivety.
If Marsch thinks that his Leeds team will survive this season playing as they did last week, he has another thing coming.
Yes, Leeds were facing arguably one of the best teams in the world, but to lose 4-0 at home at any point is embarrassing.
Marsch needs to give his squad a reality check, and saying that a 4-0 defeat feels like a victory is not the way to get your team to step things up.
