‘He absolutely must’: BBC pundit shocked by Rangers player, even GVB covered his face

There’s a lot of work for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to do at Rangers.

The new Rangers boss watched on from the stands at Hampden Park this evening as the Glasgow giants lost 3-1 to Hibernian.

Victory would’ve set up a mouth-watering League Cup final with Celtic, but the Gers, under an interim management team, fluffed their lines horribly.

The light Blues could and should have made it a nervy few minutes toward the end by reducing the deficit to one goal.

But Rangers defender Connor Goldson missed a sitter from six yards out.

Here’s what Kenny Miller said on commentary for BBC Sport: “He absolutely must score that. He must rip the net. He’s six yards out.”

BBC journalist Nick McPheat added that even Van Bronckhorst had his face in his hands.

He said: “Absolute sitter from Connor Goldson. Giovanni van Bronckhorst sits with his hand over his face as the ball sails over.”

Even if Goldson – a £3.5 million signing in 2018 – is a centre-back, you’d still put your house on him to score that.

But in truth, Rangers didn’t deserve the goal.

Sure, they dominated the semi-final tie as a whole, but the Premiership champions had a shocking first 45 minutes, culminating in conceding three times.

The defence will have Van Bronckhorst in no doubt as to what he needs to improve immediately in Scotland.

The good news is that being knocked out of this competition allows Rangers to focus on the Premiership and Europa League until the end of the year.

Okay so it isn’t much of a silver lining but it’s just about the only positive one can muster after that, along with the fact Van Bronckhorst takes charge from here on in.
