Cultured centre back Juan Foyth has the attributes to add depth to Spurs’ defensive midfield options.
The 20-year-old finally made his Premier League debut for Mauricio Pochettino’s side last Saturday, in a nervy 3-2 win away to newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Despite giving away two penalties in quick succession, it was a positive performance from the youngster, following on from a successful first appearance of the season in a 3-1 away win to West Ham in the Carabao Cup.
Normally a centre back, fellow Argentine Pochettino played Foyth in defensive midfield in the closing stages of the game against Wolves, and could be deployed there on a more regular basis.
First choice defensive midfielders Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier have both suffered from injuries this season, with the latter only returning to training this week.
Wanyama on the other hand has been dealing with knee problems since last season, meaning Spurs’ options in the holding midfield role look rather bare.
Foyth certainly has the attributes required to play as a defensive midfielder.
The former Estudiantes player is very composed on the ball, regularly looking to break lines with his passing and dribbling.
He is willing to receive under pressure, and times his tackles to perfection with his impressive reading of the game and ability to use his wiry frame to make outstretched challenges, proven by a superb last ditch block against Marko Arnautovic, in the game against West Ham.
With Dier only recently returning to training, could we see Foyth deployed as a defensive midfielder from the start against Crystal Palace on Saturday?
