Tottenham booked their place in next season’s Champions League on Wednesday night.
Harry Kane scored the only goal of the game on Wednesday night as Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in next season’s Champions League, to the delight of legend trio Micky Hazard, Graham Roberts and Ossie Ardiles.
Kane, 24, curled home an excellent effort from just inside the penalty area in what proved the decisive blow against Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United, dispelling critics over his recent form.
The goal, and indeed the three points, booked Spurs place in the Champions League as they have now escaped the clutches of fifth-placed Chelsea, meaning they will finish in the Premier League’s top four.
Former manager Ardiles reacted by describing Spurs as “the best team in London”, while Roberts described Mauricio Pochettino as “a true magician”.
Hazard, meanwhile, chose to mock north London rivals Arsenal by posting “don’t forget, Emmerdale on Thursdays next season” with the Gunners set to compete in the Europa League for a second consecutive campaign.
England international Kane took his goal tally to an astounding 39 for the season, and his 28th in 36 Premier League games though he looks set to miss out on a third consecutive golden boot with one league game to play.
Liverpool’s Mo Salah sits ahead on 31 in England’s top tier, though Spurs have leapfrogged Liverpool into third place. Chelsea can still book their place in the Champions League, as they sit two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Tottenham finish their season at Wembley on Sunday afternoon against Leicester City.
