Have Wolves made rare mistake as Michal Krmencik closes in on move?

Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa were reported to be going head-to-head for Viktoria Plzen striker Michal Krmencik.

Wolverhampton Wanderers haven’t made too many mistakes in the transfer market recently, reflected by their eight-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

Ruben Neves, Diego Jota, Willy Boly and Leo Bonatini have all been huge hits at Molineux – but it does not appear that they will be joined by one of the most prolific strikers in Eastern Europe right now.

Because the Birmingham Mail is reporting that Viktoria Plzen’s Czech talisman Michal Krmencik is closing in one a move to Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb with talks said to be at an advanced stage.

This report has emerged just a month after Jutarnji stated that Wolves were set to go head-to-head with Midland rivals Aston Villa for the signature of Krmencik – who would reportedly have cost a bargain £2.7 million.

Such a fee looks a snip when you consider that the 24-year-old has scored 11 times in 14 league games for Plzen this season – 16 in 20 in all competitions.

Krmencik’s signing would have been a risk for Aston Villa, with Financial Fair Play restrictions meaning they will be limited in their spending during January. A striker with a proven track record in the Championship, such as Leo Ulloa or Nahki Wells, looks a more sensible way to spend a reduced transfer budget.

For a Wolves side funded by ambitious Chinese investors, however, £2.7 million is merely pocket change. And while the league leaders seemingly no closer to bring an alternative striker to Molineux, Krmencik looks to have slipped through their grasp.
