Premier League rivals Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both been linked with Mainz’s Bundesliga powerhouse Jean-Philippe Gbamin.
Jean-Philippe Gbamin appears to edging closer to a move to the Premier League by the day.
The Mainz midfielder has courted interest from England’s top clubs for the last 12 months and it seems only a matter of time now before the Ivory Coast international is snapped up for an eye-watering fee.
And, right now, Everton are at the front of the queue for one of the Bundesliga’s most coveted players.
FootMercato claims that Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands is pressing ahead with a £30 million deal for a player who is expected to replace Idrissa Gana Gueye at Goodison Park.
What’s more, Gbamin’s agent, Bernard Collignon, then told Le Parisien that his client had been ‘seduced’ by a ‘beautiful opportunity’ on the blue half of Merseyside.
Wolves were linked with Gbamin too just a few days ago, according to Bild. But it is surely no coincidence that, while Everton step up their chase, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side appear to have turned their focus elsewhere.
Southampton’s Mario Lemina and Lille starlet Boubakary Soumare, who share more than a few similarities with Gbamin, are on Wolves’ radar, so say Sky Sports.
Have Wolves simply given up on Gbamin, secure in the knowledge that he is Everton-bound? Maybe so.
