Have Tottenham reached a stage where it would be wise to sell Eric Dier?

The Tottenham Hotspur star was linked with a move away from the club in the summer.

Maurcio Pochettino has worked wonders during his time in charge of Spurs, building a fantastic squad of players, and implementing his intense playing style to great effect.

Tottenham have made an impressive start to their 2017/18 campaign, and currently sit in third position in the Premier League table, five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

Many fans and pundits were questioning the Lilywhites’ strength in depth during the summer months, but a late flurry of signings including the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Fernando Llorente and Juan Foyth put paid to that notion.

So much so that it could be argued that one of Spurs’ stand-out stars no longer warrants the ‘indispensable’ tag that he held for so long.

Eric Dier joined Tottenham from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be in the region of £4 million, and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the league’s best players.

The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, with the Guardian reporting that the Red Devils were prepared to pay £50 million to lure him away from north London.

The Lilywhites stood firm, however, and held onto their man.

With Sanchez slotting seamlessly into the Spurs back three alongside Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, however, and Harry Winks shining in midfield, it could be argued that the north Londoners might be best served in selling Dier, and using the money to bring a real game-changer to the club.

Tottenham have Winks, Victor Wanyama, Moussa Dembele, and Dele Alli who can all perform the central midfield role to an extremely high standard, and there is an argument to be made that they would not actually miss the 23-year-old England international.

Following Neymar’s blockbuster move from Barcelona to PSG in the summer, the transfer market spiralled out of control, and Dier would now easily be worth more than the £50 million he was valued at earlier this year.

And if Spurs could get upwards of £60 million for Dier either in January or the following summer, it might just be in their best interest to part ways with the former Sporting Lisbon man.
