Tottenham Hotspur should surely have challenged Lyon for the former Celtic hitman.
Celtic sold Moussa Dembele to Lyon for £20 million on Friday, and that would have been a small price to pay for Tottenham to bring him to north London, but will Mauricio Pochettino regret not signing the Frenchman?
The 22-year-old joined the Hoops from Fulham in the summer of 2016, and he has gone on to establish himself as a more than competent goalscorer, racking up 51 goals in 94 appearances in all competitions.
And Dembele would surely have been the ideal back-up for Harry Kane at Spurs.
Pochettino brought Fernando Llorente into the club in the summer of 2017, to act as the England international’s understudy, but he has desperately failed to establish himself at the club.
Tottenham are in desperate need of a striker who can not only provide able-bodied cover for Kane, but one who can also push the 25-year-old for a place in the starting XI, and Dembele would have been perfect, especially for just £20 million.
The pacey hitman is a real talent, and he would have brought something different to Spurs’ attacking play.
Instead, Pochettino will now have to guide his side through until at least January with just Llorente in reserve for Kane.
And they have surely missed a trick by not bringing Dembele to north London.
