Now they have missed out on winger Douglas Costa to Juventus – a move which has been on the cards for the past two months – but it is the price which should really make chairman Daniel Levy wince.

The Italian champions have an opportunity to make the deal permanent for £35 million at the end of the season, but have room to back out.
Earlier this summer The Mirror reported that Tottenham were keen on signing Costa, with a £30 million fee mooted.
Juventus’ interest has helped push the overall fee up, but the try before you buy loan is a terrific piece of business by the always shrewd Italians.

Tottenham’s ongoing stadium costs are believed to be holding them back from getting into bidding wars for top players, despite their need to buy another winger.
Few could have complained if they missed out on Costa for a £40 million overall fee, after a season in Germany spent mainly on the bench, despite his proven pedigree.
For just £5 million he is an outstanding gamble by Juventus, and if he can hit form he will be worth an extra £35 million in this inflated market.
Tottenham might just have missed out on the bargain of the summer, unless chairman Daniel Levy has an equally impressive deal up his sleeve.
