Have Tottenham Hotspur just missed out on signing the next Dele Alli to Premier League competitor?

Will Tottenham Hotspur regret not moving for new Everton signing Ademola Lookman?

Dele Alli’s outstanding form over the past few games has underlined why he is the most in form player in the Premier League, and highlighted just what a bargain he has turned out to be.

With seven goals in his last four games, it is amazing that Spurs managed to snap him up for just £5 million from MK Dons two seasons ago.

More peculiarly, Tottenham have not revisited signing a player from the Football League since, despite Alli’s overwhelming success.

Yesterday Everton clinched the signing of Charlton Athletic striker Ademola Lookman in a deal worth £11 million [BBC], the most expensive ever paid for a League One player.

Lookman was a player previously reported to be on Tottenham’s radar. The Express reported back last May that Spurs were planning to offer £8 million for the striker.

The 19-year-old is an England under-20 international and has scored seven goals this season for the Addicks.

His versatility means he can play on the wing as well as up front, and Everton will feel they have bagged a bargain. This ability to play in more than one position would have helped his case for first team action at Spurs, rather than being stuck as a back-up to Harry Kane.

If he has half the impact at Everton as Dele Alli has at Tottenham then the money will look well spent. Tottenham may go on to wish they had pushed home their own interest in the striker, and that he does not become another one which got away like Moussa Dembele at Celtic.
