West Bromwich Albion might be boosted in their move for the Tottenham Hotspur man as Stoke City seemingly explore other targets.
According to The Daily Mail, Stoke City, one of West Bromwich Albion’s rivals for Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer, have held “further talks” with Club Brugge over signing centre-back Bjorn Engels.
The 22-year-old, previously linked with Everton and Arsenal, seemingly has a fan in Stoke boss Mark Hughes and The Mail reports that an £8.5 million transfer is in the offing.
If true, it would suggest that the Potters – who have already signed Kurt Zouma and Bruno Martins Indi – have bowed out of the race to sign the Tottenham man, appearing to leave only West Brom and Crystal Palace to battle it out for the £15 million Austrian centre-back.
Wimmer has been deemed surplus to requirements at Spurs following the North Londoners’ £42 million signing of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax last week.
The Times reported this week that the 24-year-old had ‘gone cold’ over a move to West Brom after discovering that manager Tony Pulis wanted to play him at left-back.
Wimmer has proven himself a very decent centre-back since joining Spurs in 2014 and the Baggies boss would regret scuppering the move over favouring him at left-back.
He played most of the second half of the 2014-15 campaign instead of the injured Jan Vertonghen, but has started only 14 Premier League games since that season.
