Sampdoria signed Manolo Gabbiadini from Southampton last month on an initial loan, with an obligation to buy for around £10.75 million, according to Sky Sports, and the Italian has already hit the ground running in Serie A.
With the Saints struggling in the Premier League, and currently inside the bottom three, the question must be asked, did Ralph Hasenhüttl make a big mistake selling the 27-year-old?
Gabbiadini has already bagged two goals in five outings for Sampdoria.
Southampton, meanwhile, continue to struggle in front of goal, and their tally of just 28 Premier League goals is the sixth worst in the entire division.
The south coast club do have plenty of options, including the likes of Danny Ings, Shane Long and Charlie Austin, but none of them are prolific in front of goal.
Gabbiadini was arguably the best finisher out of all of those players, and considering the fact that he still had a few years left on his contract at St Mary’s, Southampton were not in a position where they had to sell.
The Italian proved what he was capable of during his early days with the Saints, and despite the fact that he struggled during the last six months of his spell with the club, he could have been a great option for them during the reminder of the season, as they try to move away from the drop zone.
Southampton cannot change the fact that they chose to let the striker leave, however, and Hasenhüttl might just live to regret that decision.
