Leeds United should have challenged Aston Villa for John Terry.
Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia has announced on social networking site Twitter that John Terry has joined the club.
Terry has moved to Villa on a free transfer after his contract at Premier League giants Chelsea ran out at the end of last month.
It is quite a coup from the Villans to snap up the former England international central defender. After all, Villa are in the Championship and Terry is a five-time Premier League and one-time Champions League winner.
Terry is 36 years of age and he may not be able to play regularly for Villa in the Championship next season, but it is still very good signing.
If Villa could lure Terry to the Championship, then why couldn’t Leeds United? Leeds have a better 2016-17 campaign than the Villans, and they need a centre-back for the 2017-18 campaign.
Leeds have a loyal following, and playing in front of over 30,000 could have been tempting for Terry, who could have helped the youngsters at Elland Road as well.
Have Leeds missed a trick by not making a move for the former Chelsea star? Probably. True, his wages would have been high, but the defender’s experience, knowledge and hunger for the game would have more than made up for it.
Even if Terry did not play regularly for the Whites, he could have trained the defenders and help them get a better understanding of the game.
