Andrea Radrizzani’s purchase of Leeds United could have a long term impact on the English game.

The Premier League is missing a giant, but a high impact return could be on the horizon.

In recent seasons Leeds United have been tripping over their own feed when it came to even mounting a push to finish in the top 10 of the Championship. This time around it feels different.

Massimo Cellino’s roulette wheel of managers finally landed a diamond in Garry Monk, and the club sit in fifth position.

At the top of the table Brighton and Newcastle look like formidable opponents to overhaul, but Leeds have just been given a helping hand.

Italian TV mogul Andrea Radrizzani bought out 50 per cent of Cellino’s stake in the club this week, and could help Monk strengthen the squad this January.

But even if Leeds are unsuccessful in winning promotion this season, they are in a far stronger position than they were 12 months ago, on and off the field.

Leeds may go out and buy a big name like Jordan Rhodes, or even a young talent like Ashley Fletcher to help them along, and while either could have the desired impact – Radrizzani is the real missing link.

Elsewhere in the Championship, and even the Premier League, only Nottingham Forest are currently subject to a takeover, and the way they are looking, their next owners could be enjoying life in League One next season. A far more difficult journey back to the top awaits them.

The changes at Leeds have the potential to change the dynamic of English football, as if Leeds manage to get back into the Premier League at last, a giant will awaken, and Radrizzani’s wealth could help unlock their attempts to restore back to the team they once were.

There may not be a deal anywhere in England done this month which has the same long term impact as the investment into Leeds United which has just been concluded. It is early days, but there are clear reasons to be hopeful.
