Celtic might wind up needing a centre-back before the summer transfer window closes.

Dedryck Boyata, yet to return to training since helping Belgium to a third-placed finish in the World Cup, is linked with a move away, while Jack Hendry is still quite rough around the edges.

As for Marvin Compper, manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the £1 million January signing, who has one competitive Celtic game under his belt, is injured again.

Signing another central defender might not be a bad idea, and Fabian Schar, linked with a move to Parkhead in June, would’ve been an exceptional one, but has that ship sailed?

According to El Desmarque last month, the Hoops want the Switzerland international, whose release clause is reportedly £3.5 million.

However, The Daily Mail reported that Newcastle United are now interested in the 26-year-old and competing with a Premier League club means that it’s now far tougher for Rodgers to sign him.

Ideally, the Northern Irishman needed to strike when the iron was hot, when a side like Celtic, who could have Champions League football to offer, were the most attractive club in the running – but the reported arrival of Newcastle into the equation is rather ominous for the Bhoys if they remain interested.

For £3.5 million, the Deportivo centre-half is a bargain, considering he is in the prime of his career and has 42 international caps, and Celtic only have themselves to blame if he winds up at St James’s Park and impresses.
