Newcastle United-owned Wigan Athletic striker Ivan Toney would have been a perfect signing for Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Celtic have two of the best strikers in the Scottish Premiership on their books, but recent events have highlighted their need for another player in that position.

Moussa Dembele is out until early September, as Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers recently told BBC Sport, meaning that Leigh Griffiths will have to shoulder the responsibility of scoring the goals for the Hoops for the next few weeks at least.

The 26-year-old Scotland international is one of the best strikers in Scotland, but the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man could suffer a dip in form.

The former Dundee man could also get injured, meaning that Celtic could be left with a huge problem upfront.

Celtic could sign a striker between now and the end of the summer transfer window, but they have missed a golden opportunity of landing what would have been a masterstroke signing.

Ivan Toney has only just left Premier League club Newcastle United for League One outfit Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal.

The 21-year-old striker would have been a great addition to the current Celtic squad, and would have solved Rodgers’s problem in attack.

A talented and promising young striker, Toney would have been a good loan signing, and would have given both Dembele and Griffiths a run for their money this season.

It would have been easy for Celtic to convince the youngster to make the switch to Celtic Park as well.

Rodgers is a brilliant manager who can improve players, and playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world in front of 60,000 spectators would have been hugely tempting for Toney.
