Should Celtic have signed Dedryck Boyata to a new deal before the World Cup?

Dedryck Boyata continues to look almost unrecognisable from the player who was committing defensive atrocities for Celtic at times last season.

The Belgium centre-back impressed in another World Cup game on Thursday as the Red Devils edged out England 1-0 to win Group G.

It is bittersweet for Celtic. On one hand, Brendan Rodgers must be enjoying the sight of one of his players impressing in Russia, but on the other, the Hoops boss might be wishing he got Boyata signed up to a new deal before the tournament began.

Belgian outlet HLN reported three weeks ago that Rodgers and Boyata were in negotiations over a contract extension, with his existing deal set to expire in 12 months.

But considering his performances, the 27-year-old would be worth significantly more to Celtic at this moment in time had the deal been finalised before the competition started.

Longer contracts equate to more value and although the former Manchester City product could sign on the dotted line at Parkhead anyway, they are vulnerable to losing him for much less, with only a year to go on his deal.

According to Italian outlet Radio Sei, Lazio are willing to pay £7 million, which is a very decent fee, but what would he have been worth had Celtic got the extension done prior to him impressing on the biggest stage of all?

That’s the question and it’s one that Bhoys fans should be asking if Boyata leaves this summer.
