Championship outfit Cardiff City may reportedly have renewed their interest in seldom-seen Celtic winger Jonny Hayes in the January transfer window.

Jonny Hayes’ nightmare spell at Celtic has taken another downward turn. The £1.3 million summer signing was making only his sixth league start of a frustrating debut season with the Scottish champions in the 2-0 Boxing Day win away at Dundee – but will now miss the rest of the campaign after suffering a broken leg before the half hour mark.

Not only with the Irishman not feature again in 2017/18, he has also been denied the chance to bring a premature end to that ill-judged move to Celtic from perennial runners-up Aberdeen.

The Mail (live transfer blog, 12.21pm) reports that Cardiff City would have been interested in renewing their interest in the 30-year-old after losing out to Celtic in the summer.

Needless to say, however, Neil Warnock’s promotion chasing Bluebirds now won’t be making any fresh moves for Hayes with the winger set for at least half a year on the sidelines.

And it would have been interesting to see just how receptive Celtic were to offers for Hayes in the New Year. Last season’s SPFA Player of the Year nominee was seen as a replacement for Patrick Roberts when he arrived at Parkhead – before the Englishman returned for a second spell on loan from Manchester City a few weeks later.

And with St Mirren starlet Lewis Morgan set to add to Celtic’s options on the left flank, Hayes could soon have found himself slipping even further down the pecking order.

By next summer, Hayes will be 31 years of age and it appears that Celtic will be hard pushed managing to secure a profit on their £1.3 million investment now his season is virtually nothing more than a write-off.
