Kieran McGrath hasn’t yet featured for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic but he’s scoring goals for fun on loan at East Kilbride.
With Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Ross County still fresh in the mind, Neil Lennon was more than happy to talk about Celtic’s future over the weekend. Specifically, the talented young guns set to follow 18-year-old Jeremie Frimpong into the first-team picture.
Speaking to Celtic TV, the manager was quick to point out that fellow teenagers Luca Connell, Jonathan Afolabi, Kerr McInroy, Daniel Arzani and Karamoko Dembele will have a big part to play at the Scottish Premiership champions.
And if 18-year-old Kieran McGrath continues to perform like he is right now, there’s no reason why he too cannot force his way into Lennon’s sights before long.
The striker moved to Lowland League champions East Kilbride on loan over the summer in an attempt to get his career back on track after a series of injuries and it’s fair to say things could hardly be going much better.
McGrath has always been a natural goalscorer and, with four in three starts for East Kilbride so far, the Coatbridge-born striker is starting to remind everyone why Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Everton and Southampton all wanted him before Celtic got their man in 2015 (Daily Record).
“I’m absolutely delighted. Kieran takes a massive pat on the back for the two goals,” said manager Stuart Malcom.
“I’ve started three games and scored four goals, so that’s not bad. That’s given me a lot of confidence,” added McGrath, speaking to the Daily Record after netting twice against Gretna 2008 with a long-range thunderbolt and a bullet header.
“More goals means more confidence for me and scoring is what I’m striving to do. It’s brilliant just to be playing and getting game time. Helping the team out by getting goals is all I can do. That’s what I’m here to do, so the best thing for me is scoring and the team winning.”
Thankfully, McGrath is scoring and, as a result, East Kilbride are winning.
