Aston Villa are reportedly hoping to sign Tom Heaton during the January transfer window.

It has recently been reported by the Daily Mirror that Aston Villa are interested in signing Tom Heaton from Burnley during the January transfer window as he continues to struggle for game-time at Turf Moor.

Dean Smith has stuck by Orjan Nyland since arriving in October, but it would probably not surprise many Villa supporters if he looked to find a new number one goalkeeper next month.

And with Heaton currently behind Joe Hart in the Clarets’ pecking order and set to receive further competition from Nick Pope when he returns from injury, it makes sense for all parties for Villa to get Heaton through the door.

And perhaps they have received a minor boost in their quest to land the goalkeeper after he featured for Burnley’s under-23s against Leeds United on Tuesday.

It was not a good afternoon for the stopper. Leeds ran out 6-3 winners as Sean Dyche looked on. But the Whites included a number of first-team players and Heaton’s defence seemed to do him few favours.

In fact, the 32-year-old actually made a couple of excellent stops and could have done little about the goals as Leeds proved to be clinical after falling behind on three occasions.

Heaton will be reflecting upon a missed opportunity to prove a point to Dyche however, given that there is likely to have been little between the three goalkeepers available to the Burnley boss.

So, while it is not exactly the kind of display that Smith would have been hoping to hear about with January looming, it would have surely boosted the Championship side’s hopes of seeing Heaton being the goalkeeper that Burnley allow to leave in the window.
