West Ham United midfielder Havard Nordtveit has explained on the club’s official website why he has been supporting Iceland at the ongoing 2016 European Championship.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder is from Norway and has earned 28 caps for his country so far, scoring two goals in the process.
The former Borussia Monchengladbach star, who has joined West Ham on a free transfer this summer, has revealed that he is backing Iceland at the Euro 2016 finals and has explained why.
“I have been watching the Euros and what the players have done out there is amazing,” Nordtveit told West Ham’s official website.
“I am also a small fan of another country as my wife comes from Iceland so we have supported them because they are a small country and what they have done against a big team like England is a dream. She has still got a big smile after what happened the other night!”
Iceland have been the surprise package at the 2016 European Championship in France so far.
Having progressed to the knockout stages of the prestigious competition as Group F runners-up, Iceland got the better of England 2-1 in the last 16.
Home nation France will be the next team to face Iceland, and one should not write off the chances of yet another upset.
Meanwhile, Nordtveit is preparing for the 2016-17 season along with his new West Ham teammates.
The Hammers have already started pre-season training, as they aim to have a successful 2016-17 campaign.
