Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been ruled out of Arsenal’s Premier League opener tonight.
The Gunners kick off their campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Brentford.
But their talisman will play no part due to injury.
Instead, Arsenal fans want Gabriel Martinelli to start in attack in place of the Gabon international.
Here’s what they’re saying on Twitter:
Could he start?
Despite coming back from the Olympics, yes he could start.
Martinelli, a £6 million signing in 2019, claimed on Instagram last night that he was ‘ready’ for the trip to Griffin Park, indicating at least there was plans for Mikel Arteta to include him in the squad.
And with Aubameyang – and Alexandre Lacazette – sidelined, it makes sense for the Arsenal boss to fast track him into the first XI.
The 20-year-old, who started only seven Premier League games under the Spanish coach last season, didn’t feature prominently for Brazil’s gold medal-winning Olympics team and therefore should be fit enough to face the Bees.
