It’s fair to say that it’s been a pretty difficult season for Willian at Arsenal.
The Gunners signed the Brazilian winger on a free transfer this past summer but so far, the former Chelsea star hasn’t done a great deal.
Willian has scored no goals and set up three from 13 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions.
Thing is, two of those assists came on his debut against Fulham on the opening day of the season, which means he hasn’t been doing much by way of scoring or creating since August.
The North Londoners signed him up to a £220,000-a-week contract but he isn’t doing much to justify it right now.
And Craig Burley, speaking to ESPN on YouTube, has stuck the boot in, claiming the 32-year-old hasn’t ‘lifted a finger’ for Mikel Arteta’s side so far this season.
He said: “Listen, their problems are on the field, team selection and personnel. Arteta has some of his top players bang out of form and new signings like Willian haven’t lifted a finger yet.”
Burley is definitely right in saying that Willian is looking like a bit of a damp squib.
That being said, this is derby day. Arsenal visit Tottenham Hotspur today and with Nicolas Pepe suspended, the onus will be on Willian among others to make things happen.
Not many fans of the Emirates Stadium side will be expecting much, but that only means he has so much more to gain if he can impress against Jose Mourinho’s side.
