Speaking on his podcast, Glenn Hoddle has been giving his honest opinion on Dele Alli’s performances this season after he was asked if the Tottenham ace should be in the England squad.
It seems a long time ago now, but at one point Alli was one of the first names on the teamsheet with England, but after a poor run of form over the past couple of years, he’s slipped down the pecking order.
Hoddle believes that he’s got very little chance of being in the England squad and he says that he looks as though he’s nowhere near the player he once was.
“He hasn’t done enough yet no. I don’t think so, I think that if we had one player unfit. If Grealish breaks down, Maddison is another one who’s ahead of him who has injury problems, if Foden, god forbid, got injured then you’ve got Mount and Lingard, and is he ahead of Lingard?” Hoddle pondered after being asked about Alli’s England chances.
“There’s a lot ahead of him. For me, he’s got to get his head down in the summer, there’s a player in there waiting to come back out again, for whatever reason, we don’t know, but he’s nowhere near the player he was a couple of years ago. He’s got to retain the ball better, and he’s doing that now.”

As much as we hate to say it, Hoddle is right.
At one point Alli was one of the best goalscoring midfielders in the country, he hit 18 goals in a single Premier League season once upon a time, yet here we are with just two games to go in this campaign and he’s yet to score a league goal.
The fact of the matter is that Alli is far away from being in the reckoning to be in the England squad, and it would come as a massive shock if he was selected.
