Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has expressed his concerns about players signed from the Eredivisie, and he’s used Tottenham target Memphis Depay as an example.

Ferdinand was discussing some of Manchester United’s transfer business after Tyrell Malacia was signed by the Red Devils, and while Malacia looks like a promising player, the pundit was quick to point out how players signed from the Netherlands have struggled in the past.

The United legend used Depay as an example, stating that he didn’t cut the mustard during his time in England.

What’s been said?

Ferdinand discussed Eredivisie players coming to the Premier League and Depay.

“The left-back has come in who looks like a very talented footballer, but he’s untested in the Premier League so we don’t know what we’re going to get. We’ve seen it before a lot of players who come from the Dutch league who haven’t cut it who are bigger and better names. Memphis Depay hasn’t cut it, Donny van de Beek hasn’t cut the mustard yet, hopefully he does this season with new management,” Ferdinand said.

Matured

Ferdinand is right to point out how Depay flopped in the Premier League. After all, he scored just two goals during his time in England, but since then, he has matured as a player.

Indeed, if Tottenham do sign Depay this summer, they’ll be getting a very different player to the one that turned out for Manchester United all those years ago.

Since leaving Manchester, Depay has cut his teeth in both France and Spain, and now, it’s reasonable to believe he’s ready to return to England for a second-chance.

Signing Depay at this point wouldn’t be too big of a risk for Spurs.
