Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy refused to bow to Toby Alderweireld’s reported wage demands.

Tottenham Hotspur hung onto Toby Alderweireld on deadline day amid reported interest from Manchester United.

Yet United, according to The Guardian, backed right off the central defender after learning of his wages demands.

The paper claimed Alderweireld would have commanded £25 million in wages over four years on top of a £50 million plus transfer fee.

United’s decision helps vindicate Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy has refused to bow to Alderweireld’s demands for a new contract so far.

The Independent reported Alderweireld wants a contract in the region of £180,000 per week, which would smash through the club’s wage structure and make him the club’s top earner.

United also appear to agree he is not worth the big outlay at 29-years-old and with a recent injury history.

Unless the Belgian finds he can command the wages he wants abroad, then Levy’s decision to hold firm appears to have been backed by United counterpart Ed Woodward.
