Liverpool-linked David Alaba has been told he has to make a decision on his future by Bayern Munich director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in SportBild.

The Austrian has been locked in discussions with the Bavarians about a new deal for what seems like months. The latest round of talks ended in Bayern withdrawing their offer.

Understandably, this has been a key talking point in Germany and SportBild asked Rummenigge about the negotiations.

The former Germany international said: “I don’t know. We had a meeting two weeks ago with his father George and adviser Pini Zahavi. The conversation was ok, also atmospheric.

“But one also has to say we have been going in circles for months. And at some point we have to start planning for the new season. We have to know, will David stay with FC Bayern or not? Therefore, a decision was important to us at this point.”

Rummenigge was then asked whether or not the door was completely closed for Alaba staying at the club.

He said: “David Alaba now has to make a decision for himself.”

It certainly doesn’t sound too promising at Rumenigge’s end.

Whether or not the defender signs a new deal remains to be seen, but it doesn’t sound likely right now.

Alaba has refused to sign a new deal with Bayern for a long time and in a couple of months will be allowed to discuss pre-contract terms with other clubs.

Liverpool are reportedly among the teams in the race to sign the Austrian.

However, as you can imagine they face fierce competition from other elite European clubs.

Alaba would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool, especially as their lack of defensive depth has been exposed in recent weeks after injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho.

This saga could drag on for a while.
