It’s safe to say that Callum Wilson has been one of the most in-form strikers in the ongoing Premier League season so far. With 6 goals and 2 assists to his name so far, the 30-year old has been one of the highlights of a high-flying Newcastle United side this term.
After record-signing Alexander Isak succumbed to a lengthy knee injury, many questioned whether the ex-Bournemouth marksman could replicate the towering Swede’s magic up top.
However, Wilson has put all such doubts to bed, registering 4 goals and 2 assists during the 23-year old’s absence in recent weeks.
The Coventry-born striker’s sparkling displays have gone far from unnoticed, with pundit, Chris Sutton making a case for why he merits a berth in England’s squad for the upcoming Qatar World Cup.
“There’s not much time, but I think Callum Wilson has to go. I think it’ll be (Harry) Kane, Wilson and then really interesting because Raheem Sterling is versatile and (Marcus) Rashford is versatile”, he said on BBC 5 Live, as relayed by the Chronicle Live.
Sutton continued, “What we do know is, if Harry Kane is fit, Harry Kane is going to play. But if we’re calling the Premier League the best league in the world and Callum Wilson is playing well and scoring a barrel load of goals, that has to count for something.”
As things stand, Callum Wilson’s biggest rival for a spot on the plane to Qatar is Ivan Toney.
Statistically, Toney has outperformed Wilson so far, scoring 8 goals for Brentford in the league this season.
However, it is interesting to note that the latter is a mere two goals behind the former, despite playing a staggering 436 minutes lesser in comparison.
While only time will tell whether Callum Wilson is one of Harry Kane’s understudies at the upcoming World Cup, Chris Sutton’s claims are anything but unfounded.
