With the season drawing towards a close, is this Arsenal’s Team of the Season so far?

Goalkeeper: David Ospina

The summer signing has displaced Wojciech Szczęsny in the Arsenal goal and looked comfortable at his new club. A good shot-stopper, he looks more reliable than his Polish international competitor.

Right-back: Hector Bellerin

Mathieu Debuchy may feel harshly left out, but Bellerin’s season has been hugely impressive for someone so young. The 19-year-old looks a star of the future and he has shown his class when called upon.

Centre-back: Laurent Koscielny

Missed part of the campaign through injury and his absence was keenly felt. He is clearly Arsenal’s best defender.

Centre-back: Per Mertesacker

A lack of competition means that Mertesacker wins a place in this team. He hasn’t looked at his best this campaign, but he still is a superior option to Calum Chambers at the moment.

Left-back: Kieran Gibbs

Nacho Monrael has run Kieran Gibbs close for a place in the team, but the English-born left-back just about edges him out. Gibbs has become one of Arsenal’s most reliable performers.

Defensive midfield: Francis Coquelin

Stepped into Arsenal’s team mid-way through the campaign and has been a revelation. Coquelin has been the player the Gunners have missed for too long, with his performances showing steel in midfield and offering some protection to a too-often exposed backline.

Defensive midfield: Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey has not had as good a year as he did last season, but he still merits his inclusion in this side.

Right-wing: Alexis Sanchez

One of the best pieces of business Arsene Wenger has done in recent times, Sanchez has had a brilliant debut season in England. Although the Chilean may not have been quite as good during the second part of the campaign as he was over the first few months, he has still been hugely impressive.

Attacking-midfield: Mesut Ozil

The German is still being criticised and missed part of this campaign through injury, but Arsenal are a weaker team without him. He is a fine player and is unfairly treated by many. Santi Cazorla deserves an honourable mention and would also slip seamlessly into this position.

Left-wing: Danny Welbeck

Welbeck may not have become the regular goalscorer Arsenal were hoping for when they purchased him from Manchester United, but he has still done well during his first season at the Emirates Stadium.

Striker: Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman divides opinion at Arsenal, but his goalscoring tally this season cannot be argued with. Giroud has scored 17 times in 27 games this season and has given the Gunners a real cutting edge.
