Arsenal finished above Tottenham for a 21st successive year last season, but in very dramatic circumstances.
The Gunners thumped Aston Villa 4-0 on the final day of the campaign, but Spurs went down 5-1 to 10-man and relegated Newcastle United in a last-day capitulation which saw Arsene Wenger’s side nick a second-placed finish off their bitter rivals.
It compounded a horrendous couple of weeks for Spurs, who were seen as Leicester City’s main Premier League title rivals for the final couple of months of the season but an ill-tempered 2-2 draw at Chelsea ended their hopes of the title once and for all.
It was as close as Tottenham have come to winning a top-flight title in the Premier League era of English football and Walcott has illustrated the contrasting feelings over both team’s seasons as a whole – perhaps to make a point?
Speaking to The Mail, Walcott spoke about Arsenal’s title chances this season.
“We know what we need to do. Tottenham had their best season last year and we finished second,” he told The Mail.
“Let’s be honest, we didn’t perform, especially on the run-in, but we managed to finish second. So we have got it in us. We have got to make sure we are at it every game now.”
Arsenal, without a title since 2004, host Liverpool in their opening game next week, while Spurs also square off with a Merseyside club as Mauricio Pochettino’s side visit Everton.
