Bryan Oviedo joined Sunderland from Everton in January 2017.
With Sunderland getting relegated to League One at the end of last season, not many fans will have expected Bryan Oviedo to remain at the Stadium of Light, but the former Everton and Copenhagen man is still part of Jack Ross’s team.
The 28-year-old, who can operate as a left-back or as a left-midfielder, is playing for Sunderland in League One at the moment, and the Costa Rica international will stay at the Stadium of Light until January at least.
Oviedo joined Sunderland from Everton in January 2017 when the Black Cats were still in the Premier League, and it will come as a surprise to many Stadium of Light faithful that the defender is still playing for the club.
Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has praised the attitude of Oviedo in the opening weeks of the season, and he may have also suggested why the left-back is still at the club.
Donald has suggested that moving on Oviedo in the summer transfer window was tough due to his high wages.
“Bryan, unlike the other players, has turned up and given 100% and while he’s here he gives 100%,” Donald told Roker Report about Oviedo.
The Sunderland owner added: “(Bryan) is on an awful lot of money. I read an article that said the average Championship wage is £8000/9000 per week and when you’re trying to talk to people about wages, you’ve got a League One footballer who earns more than a Championship wage by some fair distance, they are difficult to manoeuvre on.”
