The Aston Villa forward has really struggled with form and fitness over the past few years.
Forgotten Villa man Gabby Agbonlahor was handed the captain’s armband by Steve Bruce for tonight’s friendly against AFC Telford, according to the Birmingham Mail, in what could be a hint of a more important role in the Villa side for the 30-year-old this season.
The Birmingham-born striker played a peripheral role for the Villans last term, scoring just one goal in 14 appearances in all competitions.

Agbonlahor struggled with his fitness throughout the duration of the 2016/17 campaign, but Bruce’s show of faith in offering him the captaincy tonight could be a sign that the forward has impressed his manager during pre-season so far.
The 30-year-old burst onto the scene at Villa Park 12 years ago, and quickly cemented himself as a fan favourite – a local boy come good.
His reputation amongst the Villa faithful has been tarnished over the past couple of years, however, following issues with his fitness and perceived attitude problems.
It is never too late to make amends though, and if he could contribute to Villa’s campaign by helping them gain promotion to the Premier League this term, he would surely earn back his hero status with Villans fans.
